Program Description: Irish census records are an important resource for those researching their Irish ancestors. These records can reveal fascinating insights into your ancestors’ lives, including their occupations, religious affiliations, and family relationships. The history of Irish census records dates back to the early 1800s. However, many of the earliest records were lost or destroyed due to a combination of government policy, accidental damage, and the tragic fire at the Public Record Office in 1922. As a result, the availability of Irish census records is limited compared to other countries. The 1901 and 1911 censuses are the only surviving complete censuses available for public inspection and are considered a principal source for Irish social and economic history.
